Scottish VW California meet, May 2016

After previous weekends at Blair Atholl and Loch Morlich (Aviemore) the third camping meet involving members from the VW California Club took place at Glen Nevis in late May.  There’s now a regular group of owners who take part, from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow and various places in between. Nine vans came along this time.  I was a little surprised there wasn’t more interest, … Read More Scottish VW California meet, May 2016

My BBC radio interview – Hiring and owning a campervan

My debut on the radio talking about camper vans took place this week.  A BBC researcher found my blog and I was delighted to be invited on to Friday’s ‘Out for the Weekend’ programme, a fairly light-hearted take on outdoor interests and activities. You can listen to the programme on BBC Radio iPlayer (starting at 1 hour 24 to 1 hour 45). A reporter had … Read More My BBC radio interview – Hiring and owning a campervan

Scottish Cali Meet at Glenmore

The third annual gathering of VW Californias (and other variants) took place last weekend at Glenmore Campsite, near Aviemore.  We had a total of ten vans come along, which probably makes it the biggest ever gathering of Calis in Scotland. As always at these kinds of events people are keen to find out how they’ve kitted out their vans, what tips they have and where … Read More Scottish Cali Meet at Glenmore

The new VW T6 and potential T7 ?

Speculation has been growing for some time about VW’s updated model to replace the T5, which has been in production now for ten years.  The new T6 is expected to be launched in 2015.  The question is: will it be a significant upgrade or will we have to wait until around 2020 for recent concept vehicles to find their way into the production schedule … Read More The new VW T6 and potential T7 ?

Happy Campers – Geert, Mia and ‘Basilio’

Geert and Mia live in Belgium and named their VW California ‘Basilio’ after their grandson, Basiel.  They settled on a Cali for its convenience and love the flexibility of being able to wild camp away from campsites.  Theirs is a well-equipped 4Motion camper and they particularly appreciate the additional accessories they have specified.  And their van is clearly a ‘keeper’ since they fully … Read More Happy Campers – Geert, Mia and ‘Basilio’

Wouldn’t it be cool to own a VW camper van ?

This is a question that has been uttered by many people across the world, I’m sure.  This post could also be subtitled “my personal journey to owning a VW camper van” since it tells the first part of my story to researching and testing out various versions of VW campers.  In my next VW camper vans post – Act 2 – I’ll review the … Read More Wouldn’t it be cool to own a VW camper van ?

60 Years of the VW Camper Van: Part 3 – Into the 21st Century

By the time the VW California was launched in the UK in 2005, VW camper vans had a heritage stretching back over 50 years.  In Part 1 and Part 2 I traced the history of the camper van from the humble beginnings of the earliest splitscreens in the 1950-60s through to the burgeoning popularity of the bay window and subsequent variations from the 1970-2000s.  In this post I bring the … Read More 60 Years of the VW Camper Van: Part 3 – Into the 21st Century

60 Years of the VW Camper Van: Part 2 – Coming of Age

In my previous post charting the history of VW camper vans I described how the T1 Splitscreen camper van was born from humble beginnings but rapidly found a market among campers the world over.  During the period 1950-67 Westfalia alone produced 25,000 camper vans with Devon, Danbury, Sun-Dial and others producing their own versions. A new model – the T2 with its distinctive Bay … Read More 60 Years of the VW Camper Van: Part 2 – Coming of Age
