Anita and her growing family took the plunge and opted for a bespoke VW camper van conversion last year, which they helped design themselves.  They love the convenience of having the van already packed up and ready to go at a moment’s notice, and so far have enjoyed family holidays and surfing trips in the UK and France.

Happy Campers’ is a series of posts featuring camper vans and their owners.  It’s designed to offer advice and inspiration to new and existing camper van owners – featuring members of the WildaboutScotland community. To take part, please send an e-mail to me answering the standard question format below together with a good photo or two.

In France

1.  Introducing myself and my camper van

We are a family of 3 (imminently 4 !) from North Yorkshire.  We have a lovely white, 2010 converted T5 panel van, Gwyn. She’s small but perfectly formed for gadding about.  The dream of having a camper seemed like it would never come to fruition until last year, when we decided to just take the plunge and buy one.  Our friend runs the company Van Life, and we decided to buy from him.  It’s fitted with black gloss units and grey carpets.

2.  How do I use my camper van ?

We tend to use the van for trips – going surfing with the lads or family holidays here and there, but it does sometimes get used as a second vehicle too.

3.  Best thing I love about my van ?

The freedom it gives.  It’s so refreshing to be able to say ‘lets just go’, and really be able to go without doing much other than packing a spare set of clothes.

4.  Pet gripes ?

Not being able to access the milk from the cool box cupboard whilst lounging in bed in the morning, when all I want is a cuppa tea !  We have to be tidy, and put the bed back first – unless I remember to leave a bottle out on the side the night before….

5.  Favourite accessories ?

The whistling kettle – surely this has to be the best sound in camping. For winter camping, the Eberspächer heater is pretty nifty..

6.  Best tip for new owners ?

Look at other vans first by visiting shows so you can see what you like and don’t like about van interiors.  Cupboard design is a very personal thing, so if you are having units installed, draw it out – think about how you would use the space and plan, plan, plan !

7.   Best trip in my van ?

Our recent trip to France was wonderful.  We took two weeks to head down to Carnac and then make our way back up the coast via the Crozon Peninsula, which was just the best place ever.

8.  Dream trip ?

To head down to Portugal from Santander, catching the sun and watching the surfers do their thing.

9.  Favourite campsite ?

The site we stayed at in Crozon – a little gem at La Bouis.  It had a perfect outdoor swimming pool and play park for the kids, yet it was still traditional and was relaxed and spacious with plenty of greenery.  It is also central for exploring the peninsula.

10.  When I’m not camping I’m …

… writing my blog about family life in our camper: http://loveourdub.wordpress.com, working and being a mama.

  1. Great description of van – we have just got ours and agree about the freedom.

Can’t find the croton campsite you suggest though- do you have any more details?

    • I think it may be Camping les Bruyeres at Le Bouis, Crozon-Morgat in the Finistere Peninsula of Brittany. Is that the one ?
