Lydia and Keith are both self-employed musicians and together with their dog, Jazz, they take off in ‘Bluebell’ at every opportunity.  Having explored Scotland and Italy their dream trip is to take off and never return !

‘Happy Campers’ is a series of posts featuring camper vans and their owners.  It’s designed to offer advice and inspiration to new and existing camper van owners – featuring members of the WildaboutScotland community. To take part, please send an e-mail to me answering the standard question format below together with a good photo or two.

1.  Introducing ourselves and our camper van

We’re Lydia, Keith and Jazz the pampered pooch, and we own Bluebell the Motorhome, a 2001 Autosleeper Ravenna on a Peugeot Boxer Base.  We are self employed musicians and music teachers (Lydia on Sax and Keith on Piano) and we live in Norfolk.  We’ve owned Bluebell for just over two years and previously owned Daisy the Motorhome, a Talbot Highwayman, who sadly began springing leaks on us after an unfortunate exchange with a height barrier in Rouen, France.

Bluebell is just under 6m in length making her cheap on ferries and her main feature is her rear lounge, allowing us to enjoy some splendid views by parking her bum in the right direction.  She hosts a shower, loo and two double beds, and we can wild camp off grid for up to 3 days without refilling and emptying 🙂

2.  How do we use our camper van ?

We use Bluebell for holidays, weekends away, and days/nights outs.  We are very lucky in that our work is based in the school terms, so we tend to be able to get out and about lots.

3.  Best thing we love about our van ?

We love Bluebell’s rear lounge and that we have two sofas in the lounge so we can both relax with our feet up on the sofa !

4.  Pet gripes ?

She’s only got a 1.9 litre engine, making getting up hill a slightly slow affair – we don’t nickname her Queen of the road for nothing !

5.  Favourite accessories ?

The solar panel – recharging our leisure battery within a couple of hours means we can wild camp for longer periods of time.

6.  Best tip for new owners ?

Be prepared for some initial snagging with your van.  If you’re buying from a dealer consider how far their workshop is to where you live, as you may need to make a couple of visits to fix snagging.

7.   Best trip in our van ?

Our last trip to Scotland at Easter was a corker – we took in the Scottish West coast, Skye and back down the Aberdeenshire coast, which was spectacular.  Further afield, last year we enjoyed a great trip to Italy, taking in the sights of Pisa and Venice and ticking boxes off our bucket list !

8.  Dream trip ?

To go and never come back – we absolutely adore being out on the road !

9.  Favourite campsite ?

We don’t generally stay on campsites, preferring aires, Brit Stops and wild camping in Scotland.  Having said that, we love Clachtoll Beach campsite, and also Silver Sands at Arisaig, both in North West Scotland.

10.  When I’m not camping we’re …

… generally gigging, teaching, walking Jazz, watching films and/or eating/drinking !
