When Dakota came to Blantyre
Dakota Schuetz, the World number one freestyle scooter champion, paid a visit to Blantyre in the West of Scotland last week, much to the HUGE excitement of hundreds of scooter-mad kids (including my son).
It’s not everyday a world champion comes to visit – and to Blantyre of all places. The reason ? It was a promotional ‘tour’ for the “Lucky Crew” – the top-class scooter riders sponsored by Lucky Scooters – and Blantyre just so happens to have a skate shop (Kaos Sk8) and a skateboard park just across the road.
Dakota very patiently signed autographs for the hundreds of kids from all around who wanted their scooters signed. He and other members of the Lucky Crew then put on a short demonstration in the skatepark.
And what a show ! Dakota effortlessly performed every kind of turning, twisting, upside down scooter trick known to YouTube. This was accompanied by plenty of ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ from the crowd (and several other colourful phrases known to the youth of Blantyre). Here’s a sequence of one of his backflips …
Just to prove that he wasn’t a one-trick pony, 17-year old Dakota then borrowed a kids’ BMX bike and very calmly rode across the skatepark and performed a 360 degree aerial turn. Easy-peasy.
Look at the kid in the red t-shirt on the right hand side of the third photo in the sequence above; I think this was the collective expression that evening !
